Natural Solutions for the Athlete

Every sport I played has always come bumps, scrapes, and bruises. From fingernails to sidewalks and everything in between - rocks, wood, metal, head, balls, arms, legs, equipment, you name it, if you can collide with it to sustain an injury I've probably done it... more than once! Thankfully my son didn't inherit that skill-set of mine, but he is a boy and they somehow seem to get mangled doing something, even if it's not athletic in nature. This scrapes & bumps topical spray is great to have on hand for such a time.

In a 4oz spray bottle mix 20 drops Frankincense, 15 drops Myrrh, and 10 drops each: Lavender & Tea Tree. Top with equal parts Witch Hazel and distilled water. To use, shake and spray on affected area.
When you want a ready-made natural solution, I highly recommend Correct-X. In my house we refer to it as the miracle in a tube. It has Frankincense, Helichrysum, Tea Tree, Cedarwood and Lavender essential oils to soothe and purify the skin. Bisabolol is known for its calming effects and ability to promote healthy-looking skin. Similar to the natural oils found in skin, jojoba oils provides optimal hydration, helping to improve the texture of skin. And the Phellodendron Amurense Bark extract is used to condition the skin.

This just happens to be a current example in my home. My son injured himself on Monday, late afternoon and 5 days later on Saturday afternoon I took the second picture. The edges always seem to take the longest, but within another week I have no doubt there won't be anything left to show of the injury.

In addition to all the bumps, scrapes and bruises I sustained, (and still do, cause honestly you don't have to be an athlete for that, tee-hee!), I also had my fair share of injuries that resulted in swelling and inflammation. My ankles have no elasticity anymore, I think I sprained each one about 6 times. It just became normal and I got really good at tapping them up myself. Clearly I didn't have essential oils back then, but am so glad I have them now to share with my son and you, should they be needed.

The inflammation support roller blend helps with healthy inflammatory response as well as soothes the discomforts that come along with an injury of that nature. In a 10mL roller bottle add 10 drops each: Frankincense & Copaiba, and 5 drops each: Deep Blue® & Lavender, then top with a carrier oil. I like Fractionated Coconut Oil because it's scentless, great for the skin, and doesn't stain clothing/bedding. Apply to the area in distress and allow to absorb, then layer with Deep Blue® Stick.

Thankfully with all my injuries I never broke a bone. Well, unless you count breaking my nose my freshman year in college. I was rehearsing for the basketball halftime show - my job was to jump off a mini-trampoline over 6 men into a diving roll. During the practice one of the guys moved, so I tucked early to avoid hitting him in the head and when I landed my knees slammed into my face. Ouch! I totally blacked out and when I came to everyone was surrounding me with horror on their faces. There was so much blood I think they were afraid for a split second that I was dead.

To support your bones on a daily basis the doTERRA Lifelong Vitality Supplements are great! And although the Bone Nutrient Complex is marketed as a women's supplement it's bioavailable to everyone, so that's another good one. When you do require extra support because the worst case happened make the bone support blend. In a 10mL roller bottle add 10 drops each: Helichrysum & Frankincense and 5 drops each: Lemongrass & Wintergreen, then top with a carrier oil (Fractionated Coconut Oil). Roll on the area of concern every 2-4 hours as needed.

When you want specific support for your tendons, give this tendon support roller blend a try. In a 10mL roller blend add 10 drops each: Frankincense & Deep Blue® and 5 drops each: Copaiba, Marjoram & Lemongrass. Top with carrier oil of choice (eg. Fractionated Coconut Oil) and roll as needed on the affected area.

If you like, or prefer, supplements then I think you should try the Deep Blue® Polyphenol Complex. Talk about multilevel support! I no longer take OTC pain meds, now I only use these and/or Copaiba Softgels. The Deep Blue® Polyphenol Complex provides a unique blend of extracts of Indian frankincense, along with turmeric and ginger. It has been clinically studied to promote healthy mobility and function, and can provide soothing support throughout the entire body. It's a good one, I'm telling ya! My husband uses it daily for what he calls his golfers elbow - he plays a lot of golf and won't be able to do so without it.

The last thing I want to leave you with is a quick reference graphic for all things discomfort. Most I've already talked about or are in the recipes above. AromaTouch® Message Blend combines Cypress, Peppermint, Marjoram, Basil, Grapefruit and Lavender to provide a profound whole-body wellness experience. Rescuer™ Soothing Blend is part of the kids line, but that doesn't mean it's not equally powerful. This is a great option if Deep Blue® oil is a bit too strong of an aroma for your senses. PastTense® Tension Blend is the one you want to reach for when your head is throbbing.

Hopefully you don't need to use these often, but it's certainly nice to know that there are natural solutions options that work wonders at supporting our discomforts, injuries, and boo-boo's.
