Cleaning with Essential Oils

When I was asked to go to an essential oil class I thought I knew everything.  If I’m honest, as we got into learning, I hardly knew anything. Seriously, like only what an essential oil was and that they are wonderful tools we can use with amazing health benefits.

One of the most eye-opening moments for me after I started down my own wellness journey with essential oils is that almost 100% of the products I was using were harmful to my family. Our home smelled fantastic, our counter tops sparkled, and our floors and surfaces were spotless.

What I learned though, was that my scented candles and refreshing plug-ins were borderline toxic.  I learned that the chemical cleaners I was using were to blame for much of my headaches and who knows what they did to my lungs and brain cells.  I learned that my lotions, potions and perfumes were super-toxins – many of them ended up smelling like straight alcohol after a short time of using essential oils.  And my hand soap, awe my fun-smelling foaming hand soap…not good either.  Sigh!

It took me some time to start shifting away from what I’d always known and used, but over time I started make small swaps here-n-there that eventually lead to a full home product makeover. I’m saving money and don’t dread cleaning anymore.  Plus, I have a son, he gets to help too, with no worries about it affecting him in a negative way.  As a matter of fact, using essential oils to clean come with the side benefit of whatever oils you’re using.

What Makes Essential Oils Good for Cleaning?
Simply put, they’re potent and powerful. Because of their potency you really don’t need to use very much to get the job done, so in the long run you’re using a natural product while saving money. It’s common to find toxic chemicals in a household because they are advertised to be potent and powerful in their own right. But the reality is, though these products claim to provide effective cleansing benefits, they often contain synthetic chemicals and questionable ingredients that may put your family at risk when used around the home.

My Favorite Essential Oils Used to Clean:
Lemon – get the sticky or gunk off almost anything!  Check out some of the top ways to use Lemon essential oils with this blog from doTERRA: 10 Way to Spring Clean with Lemon

dōTERRA On Guard® Protective Blend – this is a powerful germ killer.  If you think you might miss out without your pre-made wipes, then you should check out these DIY Cleaning Wipes.

All of them! - what I mean is, that instead of those horrible (for us) candles and plug-ins, now I diffuse.  Of course, there are some super yummy ones right out of the bottle, but you can create your own fun concoctions - there's not a right or wrong mixture.  Find what you like, be willing to experiment and most importantly have fun with it!

Why I Use doTERRA for Cleaning:
It is imperative to know that not all essential oils are created equally. So, using pure, high quality essential oils, like doTERRA’s will yield the best results when using them for cleaning. Most of the oils you can buy and get your hands on these days contain synthetic fillers, it's super sad but true.  Those synthetic properties will make the oil less effective as a cleaner (and in for general purpose use too).  Bottom line, when choosing essential oils to use for household cleaning, make sure that the oils are pure, high-quality, come from natural sources, and do not contain any synthetic fillers or contaminants.  You cannot trust the bottles labels either.  This is a harsh truth, but because of the unregulated  industry, companies can slap a label on an oil calling it "100% pure" or "Organic" you've seen them, you know what I mean and that label couldn't be farther from the truth.  I trust doTERRA because of their rigorous testing - each bath of doTERRA essential oils is put through a barrage of over 50 tests AND there's full transarency with the results.  Each bottle is stamped with a sourcing code and you can plug that into doTERRA's Source to You website (https://sourcetoyou.com).  Oh and one last thing, they source their oils from the countries where the particular plants grow naturally.  Which also means they're making a positive impact in those countries too.
