Colors & Emotions

As you may know, each essential oil has its own unique chemical makeup. The chemical design of an essential oil determines what it is useful for - some are good for cleaning, while others may be beneficial for our skin.  When it comes to aromatherapy, essential oils can be used to create unique and specific emotional responses based on its chemical makeup.

When we inhale an aroma, the scent travels through our nose to our olfactory nerve.  The olfactory nerve is the part of the brain that is responsible for controlling our sense of smell.  From there, the scent is passed along to the limbic system, that's the part of our brain where memories and experiences are stored. As the aroma travels through aromatic pathways, memories are triggered, giving us an emotional response.  And it happens in seconds!

We all have different memories and life experiences, so that means that we all will experience a different response when using essential oils for managing our emotions.  Though we may have some similarities, and there are "norms," the fact is, no two people will have the exact same experience or response.

Colors are similar.  I’m sure you know that colors are more than just aesthetically pleasing or displeasing [in some cases] to our eyes.  Much like aroma, colors effect our bodies and minds.  A colors tint, shade or brightness are all factors, like the chemistry of an essential oil, that come into play with how a color can affect our emotions.  Have you heard of chromotherapy, colorology, or light therapy?  They are basically the same thing, referring to using colors as a form of holistic healing.
Let's dive into how colors can effect our emotions and contrast with the essential oil properties in the same category.

Warm colors
Reds, oranges, and yellows can bring about everything from feelings of love and warmth to anger or hostility.
Uplifting oils:
Mints and citrus oils are known to be energizing and uplifting, and spice essential oils are known for their warming properties.

Cool colors
Blues, purples and greens can make us feel a sense of calmness to feelings of sadness or remorse.
Calming oils:
Trees, herbs and grasses are known to ground, soothe and renew.
