Holistic Solutions for Allergy Relief

As the seasons change and nature comes to life, many individuals find themselves struggling with seasonal allergies. The sneezing, itching, congestion, and watery eyes can put a damper on enjoying the beauty of spring. While conventional treatments like antihistamines and nasal sprays offer relief for some, my family prefers to seek holistic solutions that address the root cause of allergies and promotes overall well-being. In this blog post, we'll explore a variety of holistic approaches to seasonal allergies that harness the power of nature's remedies to provide you with relief.

UNDERSTANDING ALLERGIES
Allergies are basically our response to environmental triggers. They occur when the immune system overreacts to harmless substances in the environment, such as pollen, dust mites, mold spores, or pet dander. When exposed to these allergens, the immune system releases histamines and other chemicals, leading to allergy symptoms. While conventional treatments focus on suppressing these symptoms, holistic approaches aim to strengthen the body's natural defenses and reduce the underlying inflammation and sensitivity that contribute to allergic reactions.
 
HOLISTIC SOLUTIONS FOR ALLERGY RELIEF
Nutrition & Diet Modifications:
  • Anti-inflammatory Foods: Incorporate foods rich in anti-inflammatory nutrients, such as omega-3 fatty acids (found in fatty fish, flaxseeds, and walnuts), vitamin C (found in citrus fruits, bell peppers, and strawberries), and quercetin (found in onions, apples, and leafy greens).
  • Local Honey: Consuming raw, local honey may help desensitize the body to pollen allergens over time by exposing you to local pollen, which can potentially help your body build a tolerance. Add a spoonful to your tea or smoothie for a sweet and natural remedy.
Herbal Remedies:
  • Nettle Leaf - is a natural antihistamine and anti-inflammatory herb that can help alleviate allergy symptoms. Drink nettle leaf tea or take nettle leaf supplements regularly to support respiratory health. 
  • Butterbur – an extract from a plant has been shown to reduce allergic reactions by inhibiting the release of histamines. It’s been used for centuries to treat allergies, bronchial asthma, headaches, and urinary tract spasms. The unprocessed plant can cause liver damage, so make sure to look for the supplement not the plant. 
  • Histaminum Hydrochloricum – is not an antihistamine, but is a homeopathic remedy that helps the body regulate histamine production, without blocking it, as antihistamines do. It’s useful for itching, congestion, bronchial agitation, swelling, and hives.
Nasal Irrigation:
  • Saline Solution - use a saline nasal spray or a neti pot with saltwater to rinse the nasal passages and remove allergens, mucus, and irritants. Nasal irrigation can help clear congestion and reduce inflammation, providing relief from allergy symptoms, sinus problems and even a cold. 
Acupuncture:
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine - Acupuncture, a key component of Traditional Chinese Medicine, involves inserting thin needles into specific points on the body to promote balance and healing. Acupuncture may help regulate the immune system and alleviate allergy symptoms by reducing inflammation and promoting circulation.

Essential Oils:
  • Lemon - the limonene in Lemon essential oil has been shown to support a healthy inflammatory response.*
  • Lavender - when ingested, Lavender essential oil calms, balances and soothes.*
  • Peppermint – supports clear breathing and healthy respiratory function by opening up the airways.*

  • Lemon, Lavender & Peppermint – while individually these three essential oils have wonderful benefits for supporting seasonal threats, they are a powerhouse for seasonal threats when combined. You can diffuse a few drops each or take internally (heed the warning label on your essential oil bottles, but if using doTERRA they are safe for internal consumption). Since I don’t love the taste of Lavender and I prefer the convience of a ready-made pill, I personally rely on doTERRA TriEase™. This seasonal blend trio is encapsulated in a tapioca softgel which makes it super quick-n-easy whether at home or on the go. A major bonus to this magical combo is the success I've had with using it with fur baby sensetivities too!😉
  • doTERRA Breathe – is a remarkable resipratory blend of essential oils including Laurel Leaf, Peppermint, Eucalyptus, Tea Tree, Lemon, Cardamom, Ravintsara, and Ravensara. It supports feelings of clear airways and easy breathing. There are three ways to use the breathe products: use the essential oil blend aromatically through diffusion or inhalation, topically rub the Vapor Stick on your chest or neck, and internally suck on a Respiratory Drop for a more convenient way to clean and soothe your airways. This great-tasting lozenge has slightly different oils than the oil blend, combining Lemon, Peppermint, Cardamom, Eucalyptus, Thyme, and Melissa essential oils.   
Mind-Body Practices:
