There are some things in life that simply make everything a little brighter.
Sunshine. A good laugh. A fresh breeze through an open window.
And, of course… lemon!🍋
With National Lemon Juice Day upon us (8/29/26), I couldn't resist using this wonderfully zesty holiday as an excuse to talk about one of my favorite citrus fruits—and one of my favorite essential oils:
dōTERRA Lemon.
Because while fresh lemon juice certainly deserves its moment in the spotlight, there's a whole lot more to this little yellow powerhouse than what comes out when you give it a squeeze.
And that's where things get juicy! (See what I did there?🤣)
FRESH LEMON: MORE THAN JUST LEMONADE
Let's start with the obvious.
Fresh lemons are delicious, refreshing, and incredibly versatile. They're naturally rich in vitamin C and can add bright flavor to everything from water and tea to marinades, salad dressings, vegetables, seafood, and desserts.
And don't forget about the zest!
The colorful outer peel contains aromatic citrus compounds that can add an incredible pop of lemon flavor without adding the tartness of the juice.
One lemon can actually give you several different ways to enjoy it:
Juice: Add acidity and fresh lemon flavor.
Zest: Add concentrated citrus flavor to recipes.
Slices: Infuse water or make a pretty garnish.
Whole fruit: Use it in cooking, baking, and beverages.
My Go-To Lemon Water
Sometimes simple really is best.
Add the juice of ½ a fresh lemon to a glass of water, toss in a few slices, and you've got a refreshing drink that's hard to beat.
You can also add fresh mint, cucumber, berries, or a little ginger if you want to get fancy.
But here's where I have to admit something…
I don't always have a fresh lemon sitting in my refrigerator.
Enter my trusty little bottle of dōTERRA Lemon.

THE little BOTTLE THAT DOES A LOT
If you've read any of my previous posts about Lemon essential oil, you already know that I'm a big fan. And if you're new to Lemon oil, prepare to discover why.
dōTERRA Lemon essential oil is cold-pressed from the peel of the lemon, giving you that unmistakable fresh, bright citrus aroma and flavor in a highly concentrated form.
That concentration is part of the magic.
You don't need a cup of lemon juice. You don't need to cut a lemon. And you don't need to worry about whether the lemons in your refrigerator have quietly transformed into science experiments. (You know the ones I'm talking about.)
You often need just a drop or two. That little bottle can go a surprisingly long way.

LEMON IN THE KITCHEN
One of my favorite ways to use Lemon essential oil is in the kitchen.

dōTERRA's Lemon can be used internally – the Supplement Facts on the bottle affirm that. So that means you can use Lemon to add a bright citrus flavor to beverages, smoothies, desserts, sauces, and other recipes.
Try adding a drop to:
Lemon-Honey Water
When I want something simple and soothing.
Ingredients:
- 8–12oz warm or cool water
- 1 tablespoon honey
- Fresh lemon juice OR 1 drop dōTERRA Lemon
- Optional: fresh ginger or 1 drop dōTERRA Peppermint
Stir and enjoy!
Juicy Tip: Essential oils are extremely concentrated, so more is definitely not better.
BUT WAIT… THERE'S MORE!
Here's where Lemon really earns its reputation for versatility. It's not just for your water bottle!
Around the HouseLemon essential oil is one of my favorite oils to have on hand for natural cleaning.
Its bright citrus aroma makes it wonderful for freshening up your home, and Lemon can be especially handy for tackling those sticky, greasy, grimy little messes that seem to magically appear.
Think:
And if you've ever battled a stubborn sticker that absolutely refused to leave its sticky little footprint behind, you already know why Lemon oil deserves a permanent spot in the cleaning cabinet.
In Your Diffuser
Want your home to smell like you just opened a window on a sunny day? Diffuse Lemon!
Its bright, clean, uplifting aroma can help create a fresh and cheerful atmosphere.
You can diffuse Lemon by itself or blend it with other oils for a completely different experience.
Simple combinations:
🍋 Lemon + 💙 Peppermint
🍋 Lemon + 🌿Rosemary
🍋 Lemon + 🍊Wild Orange
Bright. Fresh. Invigorating. It's basically sunshine in a diffuser.
In Your DIY Products
Lemon also plays nicely in homemade body and household products.
Depending on what you're making, it can be incorporated into things like:
Pro Tip: Just remember that Lemon is a phototoxic citrus oil when applied topically, so direct sunlight and UV exposure are important considerations within 24 hours.
FRESH LEMON VS. LEMON OIL
Here's my simple rule:
Use fresh lemon when you want the whole-food experience.
You're getting juice, water, vitamin C, acidity, zest, and all the other components naturally found in the fruit.
Use Lemon essential oil when you want concentrated lemon flavor or aroma.
It's convenient, powerful, and incredibly versatile.
And sometimes… Use both!
For example, fresh lemon juice can provide the acidity in a salad dressing while a drop of Lemon oil adds an extra punch of citrus flavor. That's not cheating. That's just lemon efficiency.
One more juicy nugget…
Did you know that essential oils and citrus fruits don't necessarily give you exactly the same thing? That's because they're made from different parts of the fruit.
When you're squeezing a lemon, you're primarily using the juice.
When dōTERRA makes Lemon essential oil, it's using the peel.
So, while they share that familiar lemony personality, they're not interchangeable nutritionally.
Think of them as two members of the same family who happen to have very different talents.
Fresh lemon is the juicy one. Lemon essential oil is the concentrated, multitasking one. And honestly? I want them both in my kitchen.
WHEN LIFE GIVES YOU LEMONS…
National Lemon Juice Day may be the perfect excuse to squeeze a few fresh lemons, but don't stop there!
Put the juice in your water.
Add the zest to your favorite recipe.
Make a lemony salad dressing.
Whip up some homemade lemonade.
And grab that bottle of dōTERRA Lemon from your essential oil collection.
Diffuse it.
Cook with it.
Use it in your DIY cleaning recipes.
Freshen your space with it.
Find new ways to incorporate it into your everyday routine. Because that's what I love most about Lemon. It's not just a flavor. It's not just an essential oil. It's a little yellow reminder that sometimes one simple thing can be incredibly versatile.
So the next time life gives you lemons… Don't just make lemonade.
Make the most of every last juicy drop! 🍋
