Supplements: What You Need to Know

If you’re looking to optimize your nutrition and overall health and wellness, there are a variety of different supplements that can help you reach your goals. Although nearly half of all adult population in the United Sates take supplements, the topic of supplementation can be confusing. Not all supplements are created equally, so it’s important to understand the basics before you start using them.

WHAT ARE SUPPLEMENTS?
Supplements are products used orally or topically to improve a person’s health and/or diet. Supplements come in a variety of forms ranging from vitamins, minerals and herbs to protein powders, amino acids and more. The main purpose of supplements is to provide additional support to a person’s overall health and wellness.

WHAT DO SUPPLEMENTS DO?
Supplements help to replenish and fill nutritional gaps that may be present in your diet due to inadequate intake of certain vitamins and minerals. Supplements may be used to support metabolic functions, immune and digestive systems, as well as supporting joint, bone, heart and brain health. Additionally, supplements can give athletes and fitness enthusiasts an extra boost of energy, help to build muscle, and support performance. Supplements are also often used to assist a person with their weight loss and weight management goals.

ARE SUPPLEMENTS SAFE?
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) sets manufacturing and labeling standards for dietary supplements, and manufacturers must meet these standards to be approved as “safe for sale.” However, they do not regulate supplements in the same manner as medicine/drugs. The FDA regulates supplements similarly to food. In other words, supplements do NOT require approval from the FDA prior to being marketed and sold.

TIPS FOR USING SUPPLEMENTS:
1. Do your research and possibly consult with a qualified healthcare professional.

2. It’s important to understand the potential side effects of the supplement and be mindful of any interactions with other supplements and medications you may be taking.

3. Read the label to ensure that you are taking the correct dose for what you are trying to achieve.

4. Certain supplements may recommend taking with food to maximize absorption and reduce any potential side effects, such as nausea.

5.  Seek whole-food form supplements that your body recognizes. And supplements that have built-in tummy tamers are a bonus too.

6. Store supplements in a cool, dry place away from light and humidity to maintain potency.

7. Buy from reputable brands.

8. Track your progress to ensure that you are seeing the desired results from any given supplement.

As you can see, supplements can be a great addition to your diet if you’re looking to optimize your overall health and nutrition. However, it’s important to educate yourself and choose a supplement that you’ve researched for your particular desired outcome and purchase it from a reputable company. By following these tips, you’ll be better equipped to make the right decisions and get the most out of the supplements you choose.
