How to Beat Feeling Overwhelmed

I know you’ve felt overwhelmed at some point or another. Perhaps even more than you care to admit!?! My friend, you're not alone! It's easy to feel overwhelmed when life throws too many tasks and obligations at us. But don't worry, there are ways to manage the stress that comes with it and turn it into something positive. Today, we'll be discussing some strategies for dealing with overwhelm and creating a sense of control. We'll also look at the benefits of taking time for yourself and putting self-care first. So, if you're feeling overwhelmed, read on for some helpful tips!
 
When an individual feels overwhelmed, their body can respond with physical symptoms, such as increased heart rate, tightness in the chest, difficulty breathing, sweating, shaking, and feeling faint. These physical reactions can be indicative of an anxiety or panic attack. Other physical reactions can include headaches, stomachaches, fatigue, and even insomnia. And you know not sleeping can throw you into a catch 22 of lots of other issues. These physical symptoms can be accompanied by mental and emotional symptoms, such as feeling depressed, out of control, helpless, and unable to concentrate.

PRIORTIZE
break down tasks into smaller, manageable chunks  

TAKE TIME OUT
take regular breaks throughout the day to relax and recharge 

BE REALISTIC
set manageable goals and expectations 

DEEP BREATHING
helps to calm your nerves and reduce stress 

TALK TO SOMEONE
speaking with a friend or therapist can help to reduce feelings of overwhelm 

REWARDS
when you’ve completed a task (big or small) give yourself props 

LIMIT CAFFEINE
too much can lead to feelings of anxiousness and overwhelm 

EAT A HEALTHY DIET
proper nutrition can help to reduce stress levels
 

It’s important to practice self-care and prioritize your wellbeing. And yes, many of the 8 tips above fall into the self-care category as well, but let’s look at a few more self-care activities that can help us keep our overwhelm under control.

reading, video games, doing a puzzle 


exercise, meditate, quality sleep 


journaling, asking for help, listening to music 


setting boundaries, scheduled time with loved one(s), game night 

declutter personal space, create a routine, tackle a to-do
 

practice mindfulness, use visualization techniques, forgive self/other(s)
